Pieter Hugo
South African photographer, Pieter Hugo’s, images of the Hyena Men are everywhere these days, but I continue to be in awe of this work. The juxtaspostion of the freeway and the primaevil sense of the hyena is remarkable. It feels like these Nigerian performers have tamed dinosaurs and reminds me of a program I saw years ago about a couple in New York that lived with two 7 foot monitor lizards in their NYC loft. It’s startling, uncomfortable, and I can’t look away.
