The first time I came across Carine’s work it was with the photobook these images belong to. I was immediately drawn to it, to the almost ethereal atmosphere on her photographs, the title, the words. They made me feel something. She appeals to something universal, by building a love story, or by creating tales of hope and despair. We have all felt those moments, the best and the worse. The overwhelming enthusiasm of being with someone we love or the absolute sadness of not being able to cope with that person anymore. In what can possibly be understood as metaphors for such thoughts and feelings, we are confronted with nature’s massive creations, waterfalls, riverbeds, cliffs, rocks. All of them, in their own way, stand for something. They all play a part in the world, as beautiful, strange, scary, or even grotesque they might be. And that is probably the reason why even though some things are rough, in the end, we all need them.
When the Heart is a Lonely Hunter
// from one side to another, a red light was moving outside the blue glass window. some kind of cold energy, despite the warm color of the tropical landscape. footsteps on tiny rocks. hands against a wooden door. I tried to keep quiet but could hear my heart beating hard, eyelashes moving fast, inner voice speaking in tongues. I thought about screaming but remained silent, watching my fears dancing to an early morning song. reality changed places with nightmares and for countless nights my soul walked alone by the streets. when you feel too much it seems just like as nothing at all. an immense absence. if they were water, the solid-state of lovers would be solitude //
She is currently working on her new project, in which she explores the technique of photopainting. Evaluating from the most recent examples we got, we can only hope she doesn’t take too long for our eyes – and souls – to have a feast.
Carine is also currently working on new educational formats to teach these techniques.
