Daniel Chung was born in Seoul, South Korea and moved to the United States at the age of 12. This transition into a different culture is what has driven his work. Daniel’s body of work, Lost in Translation, explores language barriers and notions of communication. With a background in Graphic Design and Photography, Daniel incorporates aspects from each field into his work. Through self portraits and graphic elements Daniel creates more distanced and isolated works that speak to the struggle of miscommunication and cultural barriers.

Daniel Jaeyoung Chung (정재영) was born in Seoul, South Korea. He now resides in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he is a graduating senior at Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) studying Communication Design and New Studio Practice with emphasis on Photography.

He is the co-founder and designer of ISO Photography Club, a student-run organization that provides MIAD students a photography learning resource, opportunity to attend artist lectures, studio visits, pop up shows, and workshops allowing deeper interest in photography and professional practices. He has exhibited his work locally and nationally.

Lost in Translation

The body of work Lost in Translation explores the notion of communication and how language barrier can transform one’s personal identity. Constantly struggling and overcoming linguistic and cultural barriers, he is submerged and lost in the gap between two distinct cultures and languages, where he feels conflicted and disassociated. Through the process of translation, he strives to decode and give definition to his true origin and voice.
