Jo Ann Callis
Los Angeles photographer, Jo Ann Callis, is being celebrated in an exhibition at the Getty Center. Woman Twirling, which opened on March 31 and will run through August 9th. A book accompanies the exhibition under the same title.
These staged photographs from 1970-1990 came out of her desire to fabricate the image and to experiment with color processes. Callis’ wonderful narratives are emotional and layered psychological moments.
“Although my work outwardly seems to vary over many years, there are certain links running through all of it. I consistently want to make things that satisfy my sense of beauty. I respond to the tactile nature of things. Another element that pervades it is tension or anxiety. These elements always live within me and are present in all my art.”
