J Bennett Fitts
So this is how the story goes: A photographer walks into a bar. It’s dark and a cooling relief from a hot summer’s day. The photographer orders a beer and her eyes begin to adjust to the low light. The photographer notices framed photographs on one of the walls and makes her way over to the large scale images. They are exquisite, compelling, and makes the photographer even happier than the beer. Months later, the photographer (who is also a blogger) comes across the work online and it’s a very happy discovery and more importantly, gets to visit the delicious website for more goodies.
J Bennett Fitts was born in Kansas City and received his BFA from the Art Center of Design in Pasadena and now lives in Los Angeles. He has a long resume of solo and group exhibitions, awards, articles, and has work in many collections. He was a PDN 30 and his work is featured in a host of magazines including The New Yorker, The New York Times, and Art in America. Mr. Fitts prefers not to write about his work, he uses that time to make work–he has three new series in production and I can’t wait to see them.
I’m featuring work from three series, No Lifeguard on Duty, of empty pools (and the work I discovered in the bar), a wonderful series of fishing in the Los Angeles river, Soon to be Titled, and pared down landscapes with Industrial Landscap(ing).
