©Carol Bouyoucos, 9 Arches: Above the Fruited Plains 2026 A commision by the Peekskill Arts Alliance to create 9 murals to be permantly installed along the waterfront as part of the city of Peekskill’s restoration efforts. Each mural is 23′ high by 16′ wide and digitally printed on a UV outdoor vinyl.

Carol Bouyoucos is a photographic artist who has fully embraced digital photographic processes, using her vast archive of imagery to create reimagined botanical assemblages and mythological landscapes. They are at once both futuristic and historical. Carol draws inspiration from the untamed landscape of a nature preserve near her home in in New York state and from art history movements like the Hudson School of Painting. Her recent large-scale installation in Peekskill NY, a semi-urban environment, is a series of nine prints that are 23 x 16 feet. Titled Above the Fruited Plain, each panel depicts large scale botanical elements against a faded blue-gray background of historic photos of Peekskill’s industrial past.

Carol Bouyoucos, from North Salem, NY, is a contemporary American artist whose work explores the intersection between nature and technology. Carol’s digital photographic works

evoke a romanticism and nostalgia of nineteenth century landscape painting, though created with distinctly 21st century tools. She has exhibited her work internationally, and considers her most successful efforts to be her collaborations with fellow artists and curators.

My practice is rooted in the history of floral stillife and landscape painting. Working in the digital space, my goal is to embrace a post-photographic material language that reimagines these histories. Both subject and surface are digitally abstracted through pixilation and fragmentation. Multiple images are digitally collaged and painted. The subjects are recognized as flora and fauna but their distortions confuse the narrative. By embracing the instability of both the natural world and the digital space, my work situates itself in a restless, shape-shifting terrain. – Carol Bouyoucos
