Ann Mitchell
continuing to look at West Coast photographers
In some ways, Ann Mitchell’s images can only come from someone who is not native born, from someone who looks at strip malls, barren terrain, plants of unusual shapes and textures and finds a beauty that most of us don’t see upon first glance. A native New Yorker, Ann’s education took place on this side of the country. A BFA from Art Center, and an MFA from Claremont, Ann now shares her vision and knowledge as an Associate Professor of Photography at Long Beach City College.
Her slowed-down sensibility comes from keen observation and a 4×5 camera. “While the visual elements of my work may shift as I work, there is a common set of interests at the core of each series. Central to all is my interest in our use of the land and the structures we create.” Ann recently shared an exhibition with Beth Dow at the Photography Center Northwest in Seattle, and in Fall 2007 Balcony Press released Austin Val Verde, a monograph of the Val Verde project.
