Artist and Photographer Cathy Cone has recently opened the exhibition, Portals and Portraits, at the Brattleboro Museum in Brattleboro, Vermont that will run through June 11th, 2023. On May 11, at 7 p.m. there will be an Artist & Curator Conversation: Cathy Cone and Sarah Freeman. The exhibition features several projects, one featured here and today we feature, Portals.
Cone approaches photography with the idea of transformation. She has her hands in the physicality of photography, whether painting on tintypes or working with historic print processes in the darkroom. Cathy with her husband, master printer Jon Cone, founded Cone Editions Press in 1980 in Port Chester, NY as a collaborative printmaking workshop. Cone Editions Press is now located in East Topsham, Vermont where Cathy is director of the Workshops and Studio.
Curator Sarah Freeman shares about her Portals work: In her series of photogravures, Cone plays with our innate desire to connect with the portraits’ subjects. Obscuring the subjects’ faces with clouded or opaque layers of imagery, Cone creates a barrier that we cannot penetrate. Unable to fully perceive the faces portrayed, we are denied the intimacy that the portraits might otherwise allow. This push and pull between visibility and obscurity calls into question the very purpose of a portrait and invites us to consider the process of knowing and understanding ourselves and each other.

Cathy Cone is a photographer and painter. Her surrealist approach to photography began in the late 1970’s with the introduction of the “Diana” camera. This led to investigation of experimental techniques towards a multidisciplinary approach to her poetic image making. Cathy received her training at Ohio University, Vermont Studio Center. She received her MFA at the Maine Media College. Some of her exhibitions include Weisman Art Museum, University of Alabama, DeCordova Museum, the Griffin Museum of Photography and the Vermont Center for Photography. Her works are in the collection of IBM, Hallmark Fine Art Collections, American Express, and the Beekman a Thompson Hotel, New York.
