February 19, 2026. Taonan, Jilin, China. My grandmother, Zhao Guiqin (90), applies a piece of medical tape under her eye to alleviate the persistent irritation caused by long-term trichiasis. In a landscape of scarcity, this small, repetitive act of "patching" herself reflects the quiet resilience that has defined her ninety years of survival under the socio-political change and personal trauma.

Beatriz remembers that when Wendy was younger, the other children at school made fun of her for not having a mother, and Wendy’s way of feeling cared for and loved was to ask her aunt to carry her and braid her hair. July 13, 2025. This picture belongs to the series Caring in the absence a visual research project that documents the shock wave of feminicide in Mexico. By using participatory methodologies with the families of murdered women, we create collaborative portraits where they engage in the artistic direction to narrate their own stories. Pink motifs function as a collective act of reappropriation and redefinition of the pink crosses first placed in Ciudad Juárez three decades ago, when hundreds of women were murdered with impunity. Drawing on an aesthetic of tenderness, the color pink becomes a narrative figure that speaks to the aftermath of feminicide: transgenerational trauma, psychosocial harm, and gestures of resilience in orphaned children and in the women left in their care.
