Pinar Volacan
Earlier this year, my friend, Phil Condit, shared an image with me where he had photographed a woman wearing a meat bikini. I was pretty impressed with his sewing skills, in a Silence of the Lambs sort of way. I had forgotten about Pinar Volcan’s amazing work of women in pink wearing various animal skins, until I came across her recent work featuring organ meats (and she throws in a placenta or two, just for good measure). ” Produced in the island of Itaparica, in the North Easter coast of Bahia, Brazil, Volcan dresses her female subjects in clothes which she makes out of animal organs. Her subject matters include the female body, colonialism, and death”. I’m thinking Phil needs to revisit the butcher and Heidi Klum might consider a new Project Runway challenge for next season…
