Books come in all shapes and sizes they attract us through their color and type asking quietly or yelling for us to pick them up and see what they hold within. On less frequent occasion a series of books will be published, a pair by a single author or a group of discrete volumes that relate thematically or ideologically. Through a shared visual language, they become a collection. One of the joys of companion books is forming connections that reach across the distance of space. The ideas interact beyond the confinement of their own pages to influence thoughts and feeling of their paired volumes. It’s a bit of magic, an extension of the visual realm. The covers explore the idea of corelated space through color and typography.

Lost IV (Oji Haynes, Andre Ramos-Woodard, Marshall, Scheuttle, Richard Renaldi, Tom Griggs
Peter Baker, Yoav Horesh, Melissa Alcena, Melody Melamed, Tracy Dong, KGP) comprises of ten books that showcase the works of artists exploring themes such as gender, class, racism and contemporary culture. Each book features a single artist with a full bleed cover and a varying strip of color. The artist’s name appears in bold type that changes in visibility based on the light. The back covers have different color blocks and when all are line up in the correct order, they spell lost, giving a bit of joy in creating something legible from abstract shapes while referencing maps.

Republican National Convention / Democratic National Convention (Kris Graves, KGP) have cover designs that show the unity and division of the two main American political parties through the colors of the American flag. One cover gives dominance to Democratic blue and the other to Republican red. Through the letters, shared use of color and shifting placement of stars, a visual language emerges that’s strongly typographic and reminiscent of a pamphlet that asserts political persuasion.

The Northside and Björkevägen: Birch Road (Allen Wheatcroft, Workshop Arts) two covers with identical image and text placement weighted to the right to give a sense of movement. The colors of the paper, type and photos create an ongoing dialogue and harmony from small differences.
