Craig Alan Huber: The Spirit Within San Junipero
For almost two decades, photographer Craig Alan Huber has continued the historical and almost transcendent practice of loading his large format cameras and capturing images that speak to beauty, nature, and a quality that he calls “the spirit within.”
Growing up in California, Craig fell in love with the California missions and began exploring the environs influenced by Junípero Serra. Beginning with a visit to Mission San Diego in 2008, he eventually photographed all twenty-one Alta California Missions, spending at least a full day at each one, working in a “methodical and purposeful manner to pre-visualize each image.”
Veritas Editions has recently released The Spirit Within Saint Junípero, celebrating the significant places Junípero Serra delivered his message in each of the three major phases of his life—Mallorca, Mexico, and Alta California. The book features 101 plates from original large-format film negatives created as platinum/palladium prints. Included is accompanying text from well-known Serra biographer Robert M. Senkewicz providing a brief history of Serra’s major life experiences, from his youth in Mallorca to his final days in Alta California.
Craig Alan Huber is a seasoned photographic artist working in the traditions of landscape and architectural photography. His work has appeared in publications including The Photo Review, Photographers’ Formulary, and View Camera Magazine.
