ANTHONY PERKINS

NEW ORLEANS, LA – JUNE 6, 2020: Anthony Perkins pickets in front of Metro Service Group. Hoppers — workers who hop on and off garbage trucks to collect 250,000 lbs of the city’s waste each week — are essential workers in the time of coronavirus. They organized as the City Waste Union and are demanding better working conditions and pay during the coronavirus pandemic, including a $15 hourly wage, $150 in weekly hazard pay, proper personal protective equipment, and a fix for broken trucks they say leak hydraulic fluid. Perkins’sign reads “I Am A Man,” a reference to the 1968 Memphis sanitation workers’ strike, which Martin Luther King Jr. was visiting when he was assassinated.
