Paul Turounet

Continuing to look at Review LA participants. Today’s posts are Paul Turounet and Nicola Dill.

Paul Turounet is a really interesting photographer. His unorthodox approach to his work engages the viewer in a remarkable way. For his project, Estamos Buscando A/We’re Looking For, Paul explores the world of illegal aliens in their attempt to cross the border. The 4×5 sepia toned format ads a nostalgic feel that allows him to humanize the migrant experience. Ultimately this was a site specific project that included an installation of portraits on large steel plates permanently affixed to the border was in Tijuana, Mexico. In Paul’s words “we are all migrants in search of something profound and meaningful to our being.”

Another of Paul’s series, What Happens Here, builds visual tension with the repetition of an image of a woman in distress, an unusual and effective juxtaposition that throws the viewer slightly of course and makes us want to revisit the work again. The is not a complete set of images from the series.
