Juliana Beasley: Aaron Siskind Fellowship Winner
featuring the Aaron Siskind Fellowship winners
I could probably do about 1,000 blog posts on Juliana Beasley and still have more material to share. She is a person who seems to be so completely comfortable with herself, without pretention, without worry about how people will react to her unwavering stare into worlds the most of us haven’t entered. She does it all with enthusiasm, sensitivity, and grace. And she has made me her champion. Juliana has recently been selected as a receipient of the Aaron Siskind Individual Fellowship, along with 5 other photographers which I will feature later this week.
The wonderful Aaron Siskind “directed that his estate become a resource that would support contemporary photography and reward and encourage excellence in its practitioners. Since his death in 1991, the Aaron Siskind Foundation has been one of the few American organizations providing cash grants to individual photographic artists on a yearly basis. The Individual Photographer’s Fellowship review panel examines the work of upwards of 700 applicants each year, awarding a varying number of grants in amounts of up to $5,000.”
Juliana received her fellowship for the series, Rockaway, the same series that won the New Jersey Council of the Arts grant. She is currently in Rome lecturing at Festival Internazionale di Roma. Juliana also has an engaging blog, Juliana’s Lovely Land of Neurosis and revealing book, Lapdancer. Congratulations, Juliana!
